Bouncy hot idle and temperature gauge

It seems whenever my wife takes the car out the next time I drive the Quattro 
something new has broken.
The latest think is the temperature gauge stopped functioning.  I changes the 
switch about 4 years ago ... too soon to fail again I think.  I also noticed 
that when hot ... as I come to a stop and put in the clutch the idle bounces a 
few times from 1000 - 1200 rpm and back before settling or I start off again.  
Is there a relationship between the 2 phenominon?
