Those would be the downsides of a newsgroup. :-) However, the benefits
(stated previously) are worth trying to achieve, IMHO.

An alternative to using alt.autos.audi (which is totally public), is to
change the mailing list to a newsgroup that is hosted somewhere other than
the general Internet.  For example, consider the microsoft.* newsgroups
that eminate from Microsoft.  A Quattro newsgroup *hierarchy* (ok, maybe
that's overkill :-) could be setup somewhere, thus providing all the
benefits of newsgroups (threaded discussions, a hierarchy,
read-at-your-whim) and avoiding some or all of the disadvantages (spam,
total exposure to the Internet, etc).

Anyway, I merely offer this as elaboration on the original idea of using a
newsgroup.
