Re: 5KCSTQ at Bonneville, How about Talladaga
Graydon,
Well this was no Bonneville test but.......
The August 1986 VW & Porsche magazine has an article on the
5000TQ that was prepared by Audi of America Sport
Department (Josef Hoppen and the Technical Development
Group from Audi AG) to run at the Alabama International
Motor Speedway in Talladaga. Bobby Unser drove the car to a
top speed of 216 MPH on the straights and averaged 206.825
over the 2.66 mile track. The car was reported to be a
production vehicle with a specially prepared 650 HP turbo
I5 engine and the standard Quattro 5 speed drivetrain. "The
car had been lightened with body panels of Alcoa alloy.
(A8 here we come) The car featured a roll cage and the
floorpan was modified for aerodynamic reasons. Front and
rear spoilers were employed, lower sill extensions and the
vehicle was lowered as compared to a standard? 5000CS Turbo
Quattro. It ran with knock off wheels and race slicks." The
picture also shows some nice fender flares that were added.
The engine compartment shot shows a strut brace and what
looks like custom camber plates at the strut towers.
Happy speedway driving
