Hi Art,
I was the person whom had to have the entire tanny replaced because of the
worn bearings on the output shaft.    My car was one year out of warranty but
had only 49K miles.   Audi replaced the tranny because my milage still
qualified me as I was under 50K according to the dealer.   The dealer also
mentioned that there were a number of other S4 owners that had the same
problem.  The symptoms you mention were the same that I had.   I would get the
problem identifed quickly before you hit 50k miles.

I posted a request for phone info for my recent S4 purchase with an aside
about a hum/groan that seems to come from my rear end, and was blown away by
someone that had a similar noise and had to replace the entire transmission.

Does anyone else have any experience with this noise? It sounds like a hum or
grumble coming from the rear of the car, and is only apparent above 65 mph or
so. I have only driven the car once on the highway, and will spend more time
assessing the noise and its origins.

Does anyone have any warranty strategies to share, the car is a '93 with 48K,
and is out of warranty as far as I know. I have a friend of a friend who is a
dealer mechanic and may be helpful also.
