Need info on VW Golf Syncro.

Hi Q-Listers!

I know some of you have expirience with VW Golf Syncro. Friend of mine is
going to buy one 1989 year model with 1P(?) 1.8 engine.
This car has one problem. Fifth gear is not engaging. Shift is moving on the
place but nothing happens. There are no any sounds which can help to
understand problem. What could it be? Does it a common problem with these
cars?
What else he has to look for? Any suggestions about problems with cars of this
model year?
How to maintain tranny of VW Golf Syncro? What kind of oil demands gearbox,
rear diff, visco coupling? How often one has to change oils in tranny?

I will greatly appreciate any help on this subject.
