Well, I was the person who had to have my tranny rebuilt because either the
synchro failed and took the bearings with it, or the bearings failed.
Symptoms were different though, noise was sort of a growl from the tranny.
The Audi mechanic couldn't identify it for sure until it failed. Either
way it cost me about $4000. Same tranny (016) and engine (3B), I think.
It sure would be nice to know just how many other S4 owners actually had
tranny problems. Perhaps they're not as bulletproof as we think.
Get it checked under warranty.
