Used car lots are mostly the pits.  I have always had much better luck
with private owners:  if there's something wrong and I still want the
car, we usually reach an agreement on how it will be handled.  Either
the price is negotiated or repairs are made (usually the former).  I am
a spinner of wrenches, not impressed with most repair shops, and not
inclined to pay for any kind of dealer warrantee.
It's not a car, it's a hobby.  YMMV...
