I'm not so sure about this - perhaps the real reason the Pilgrim Fathers took to
the ships was that they were incensed at what was being done to the language.

Any linguistics expert will tell you that present-day 'American' pronunciation 
is closer to Shakespeare's English than present day 'Queen's English' is.
