This used to be the case over here. My V8 has Audis Procon ten system,
later V8's, ie 91 + 92 were available with Procon ten + airbags as an
option. I seem to remember an interview with one of the Audi engineers who
stated at the time that the full Procon system was better but would
ultimately dissapear due to US regulalations.

Just another example of elegant engineering killed by mindless beaurocrats.
