Re: A first car for my son to learn on
Just 'cos somebody else posting on this thread is also an
Elliott and just because I'm about four years ahead, in
time if not in brains.
Here is my ukp 0.0125.
I gave my younger son my old 1983 80 quattro as his first
car, partly to partly cost justify me buying my original MB
ur-q. (nobody would give me a sensible price for the poor
old thing. about 115,000 miles on it, some of them at high
lateral g)
He has turned into a quite superb driver, put another
40,000 miles on it before it got too expensive to fix. The
engine was still pretty sound, but major money was needed
on suspension and brakes. He only stacked it once, and not
too severely. (When I look back at how many cars I broke at
his age, I can hardly complain)
Now here's the interesting bit. He replaced it with a 320i.
He says the 320 is more fun to drive because it lets go
more easily in a far bigger way.
Look at it this way. Your kid is your kid. A car is only a
car, even if it IS a quattro. Spoil the boy! At least he
will know, when he gets his Beemer later, that he learned
to drive in a proper car!
PS. To keep his hand in, his mum lets him drive her S2
wagon, and his sister SOMETIMES lets him drive her 90
quattro. We practice what we preach round these hyar hills!
