Velly intellesting.  When I took mine apart, I was convinced that there was 
always compression on the spring and plunger (push rod).  And once my plunger 
relubing wore off, the noise intermittently returned.  One lister speculated the
sound was due to side slap against the plunger bore and therefore effectively 
unrepairable.  

However, lengthening the spring is certainly worth a confirming experiment.  
I'll try mine next time I get a chance to get in there.
