John, I finally got around to reading some old digests and saw yours.

There is a TSB out on this problem I believe. I happened to be watching
over the shoulder of a '91 200 owner while he was flipping thru the TSBs
looking for this or a very similar problem.  There is a diode on the
instrument cluster circuit board that goes bad and can cause this. If
your mechanic has the service bulletins, you should be able to find
out the details. HTH.
