Audis are NOT bulletproof...
For the last few years, a high school on the west side of Phoenix has opened
the doors to its industrial arts department to the public on Wednesday night
... for those of us with limited access to machine shop facilities, this has
been a dream come true.
Until last night, when the dream very nearly became a nightmare. My friend,
Ted, and I went there to weld a muffler onto my Ur-Q's SS exhaust system as
neither of us have much experience welding SS and wanted somebody around to
help us out in case we ran into trouble.
Since access under the car is pretty good, we decided to tack everything in
place first then pull it off the car and weld up the remainder in the shop.
While we were jacking up the rear of the car just outside the back door, we
unknowingly became the target of a drive-by shooting. A teacher inside the
shop said he saw a muzzle-flash from a dark brown Monte Carlo that drove by
and judging from the sound of it, the gun was probably a .22 or .25. cheapo
special. I assure you there's nothing quite like hearing a gunshot and the
bullet riccocheting off the brick wall behind you to get your attention!
Fortunately, no one was hurt, but we decided to call it a night and got out
of there ASAP. This morning, I noticed a scratch along the fender flare on
the right rear side of the car that wasn't there yesterday and I suspect it
is either from the bullet itself or a piece of brick from the wall. If so,
it's proof that Audis aren't quite as bulletproof as I once thought! :^)
(BTW, this high school isn't located in the best part of town but it's also
not the worst part of town, either ... definitely gives one pause to think,
doesn't it?)
