I was in South Africa in December and stopped at an Audi dealer where I saw
my first A8. The A8 had a bullet hole, (about 9 mm) entering high on the
right (passenger) side fender just in front of the tire. There was also
damage in the wheel well behind the tire. The bullet entered the fender,
went throught the tire, then into the passenger compartment. The dealer
said it was the result of a police shootout on the street in front.
Over here in the states, we know about carjacking because we see it on the
news. In South Afica on a two week business visit, I met two people who had
their cars taken from them at gunpoint, and everyone else had a story about
someone they knew who was "hijacked" as they call it.
Cars are equipped with elaborate alarms with ingition cutout timing devices
that must be activated by a hidden switch under the carpet. But the bad
guys know this now and they make the owner ride with them long enough to
learn the alarm.
When you fly into South Africa, you can bring your gun with you and get a
temporary permit for it at the airport.
