If it is intermittent I have my doubts it is the diode...(hard to say for
sure without seeing where it is in the circuit though.) Sounds more like a
soldering problem, cracked pcb trace, or (as mentioned "it smelled like") a
grounding problem. Any BTDT's that can help Jeffrey? Perhaps it is best
shelved and ignored until you have a better reason to remove the instrument
cluster and then take a loot at the soldering on the pcb very carefully for
cracked connections. HTH
