Re: Regarding the 5000CST
I look for parts cars in the paper and buy the whole thing, which can be had
from $100 to $400. I part them out and store the parts and have the carcass
towed away (sometimes they will pay ypu for it. I bought a nice 84 Avant
this summer for $250 that needed a trany. I just happened to have on in the
shed. I slapped it in and it runs great. I'm going to sell it here this
month.
So I'd try to find a used trany and slap it in. But still, for an initial
investment of only $350, you could afford to put a reconditioned one in and
still be ahead on what a completely working 88 might cost.
I'm wondering, have you tried to replace the fluid yet? Auto transmissions
can be a funny beast. If the diff is ok in it, it may just have a bad or
fouled torque converter. If you change the fluid I'd drop the pan and clean
the filter as well and see if that doesn't do the trick.
Good luck.
