Dash dimming

Ever since I made a remark last week about my dash dimmer it has worked ok. So 
can anyone tell me why on earth the backlighting for the fan and heating 
controls are in the dimming circuit too?

Two people learnt things this weekend, 
1) I realized that one of those additional wiring looms for the headlights and 
some of Phil's 'Starship lights' are going to be ordered first thing Monday.
2) A ovloV T-5 driver discovered that you can't out run an Ur quattro - 
especially on the A15 between Market Deeping and Sleaford (even at dusk)
