Yes, but lets stay with the brackets a moment - because they are usually the
problem. The flat one that is held to the side of the roof itself may be
broken - or the funny looking thing that is is front of it that rides in the
channels of the flat piece. To remove the funny looking one, remove the tiny
little clip and pull it off. It should be all one piece. The little rod it
goes on is actually the cable end. Also check that your rear water tray is
all right - it can get off track and bind things up. It is held on on each
side by those little clips also. It can be a little tough to get those
levers off. After removing them, push the tray back a bit and see if it
moves smoothly. Also look back at the flat bracket on each side and make
sure the little end pieces all the way back aren't broke off... Now scratch
alignment marks on the serrated parts on the flat bracket by each screw and
remove it - make sure it ain't gotta crack in it. IF all those pieces are
good (very rare) then you'll need to do a cable alignment.
Remove the roof panel. Do not disturb the funky looking center bolts on
each side in the front - they set the depth and its a bear to do it right
again regardless of what the book sez. Once its off, remove the panel cover
to the motor (one phillips head screw above (behind) the light), flip the
lever, and get the allen wrench ready. Look down each black track and about
85% of the way back you'll see an arrow. Crank the motor with the wrench
until the good side lines up and compare to the bad side. If they don't line
up then loosen the screws on the motor and drop it down enough to clear the
worm gear. Then you can pull the bad side into alignment and button it up
again. The arrowed alignment marks correspond to a completely closed
position as I recall. Don't rotate the sunroof motor with it removed or
you'll screw up the microswitch timing and I'll have to dig that procedure
out of the archives.
If all else fails, the best thing to do is find an undisturbed 87 or newer
5K in a junkyard and make a deal with the yard owner to buy the rails, cable
assembly, and brackets. Mid 86 they changed to new improved parts and its
all a whole lot better. The dealer sells the 'improvement kit' but for most
of us neither our hearts or wallet can take it.
I got all mine fer 30 bucks, including a new inner fabric panel.
