but the small highly visible portion of the population always sets the standard
and generates trends. Even if only .01% of the population were actively involved
in jousting, the rest would imitate and follow suit (did I mangle a metaphor yet?)

Only in the US do we still use such archaic methods of reckoning. I think it's
out of fear of a world government or some such xenophobic paranoia.
