I am on the road and therefore not near my Audi files, but I recall
receiving a customer service bulletin a year or so after I bought my new
'92 100CSQW to the effect that my dealer should check tranny fluid
levels to prevent premature wear.  My dealer service rep was unaware of
the bulletin when I showed it to him.   Might that be a factor in your
case?  I don't know.  Is it worth draining and refilling the tranny
before you consider major surgery?  Probably.  By the by, my car is
humming right along at 190K (knock on burled elm).  Good luck.
