Chris & Pam:  Congratulations on your newborn!  I have a five year old 
daughter, and she, too, is the joy of my life.

I have an '86 turbo and an '89 200q.  In both cars, I found the middle 
belt lacking (safety wise) as it automatically retracts.  The owner's 
manual states not to use a car seat there for this reason.  I went to my 
local wrecking yard and got manually adjustable seat belts from a pre '86 
5000.  This, combined with locking clips, and her seat does'nt budge an 
inch!  

If your belts are automatic, I would reccommend this retrofit.  Belts 
from VW's work as well.
