I've always found it odd that most European wagons (such a sick word to
me, but I know the Audi wagons/Avants are nice and I like 'em), have
extra seating for children in the very back, sometimes facing rear.

Isn't that supposed to be a crumple zone?  Are we supposed to protect
the drive at the childrens expense?
