Thompson's new 200tqw too!
Greetings,
As one of the longtime standing members of the quattro-digest and a
completely bazerk Audi quattro head, I proclaim my long babbling as follows
will be taken lightheartedly...
As of Sept 23rd, we are once again, an ALL Audi quattro family. I took
ownership of a 1989 200 tqw. (Yes, Dave Lawson asked me how it drove before
his purchase last week and we both agreed that they are 4 door coupes and
awesome hwy rides). Somehow I new that he would beat me to the punch for
his "new-ride" digest announcement. Anywho, here's my latest purchase...
-Late 1989 Audi 200 turbo quattro wagon
-Build date 12/88
-Lago Blue Metallic, gray leather interior, heated sport seats. All good cond.
-138,456 miles when I bought it.
- I think that it has all the options except a third rear seat and the
intensive winshield washer system. Option codes are as follows and
-I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW-
what they are; 021, 079, 139, 329, 340, 352, 366, 383, 398, 409, 432, 573,
597, 668, 951, 998
-Installed Nokia phone
-New parts are; ZF power steering rack, pump, interior blower motor, econ
programmer, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, aqua style 205/60-15
tires, front struts, bushings and a turbo coolant pump.
General condition is excellent, however clearcoat has some small chipped
away sections no bigger than a thumnail on the hood and near the rear Fuba.
All electricals work and not one unstiched seam in the interior. Rims are
nice with complete no- cracked hubcaps. Engine compartment has one wierd
item missing. The wire for the PS fluid is gone. Nope, not tucked away or
pushed back somewhere but just not there. Occasionally the "brake" light
will flick on and off over a very bumpy road. Got Me. I purchased it from a
local VT mechanic/racer Fred Bross, via a trade-in through Autosport. The
first item that I did was a VIN dump at Lewis Motors and follow the service
history. All checked ok. Turned out that a woman drove this for that last
six years and had it was serviced at Autosport the whole time. Cool. It was
originally purchased thru the VCI auction at Manhiem, PA back in '92 and
then sold to the lady. Cool again, I'm the third owner. I contacted
Autosport and now have all the records. The very second item that I did was
to remove the rear window trim strips and use an x-acto blade to trim off
the rubber that got wavey over the last 8 years. Next was to run a can of
Wurth valve cleaner thru the engine and then debadge the car. After driving
it HARD for a month, it was apparent that after 140K miles it needed some
MORE items. ie blowing black smoke "like a runaway bus" on boost. (thanks
Ben H. for settling me down on that one with a diagnosis) and hard starting
when cold. First item was an air leak and the second I think might be a
fuel pump check valve or in need of new injectors.
?-HELP-?
I am Bently'less and need to know the steps as to properly set the idle
and CO
mixture with my Sunpro 7678 using the on/off duty cycle method. It seems a
little lean...? Surges a tad when cold.
Here's what I've installed so far: K&N, Redline gear oils, new IC to TB
hose, new intake manifold to VC hose, oil/filter change, "S6" badges, Hella
500 driving lights, ATE Power Disc rotors front with Remsa pads, ATE rotors
rear with ATE pads, Thompson style mud flaps, Bosch wiper blades and
finally I refinished the OEM shift knob with marine varnish and installed
an Audi Sport logo under the plastic shift knob. While I mounted the
Hella's up front, I still was in a quandry as to where the switch would be
located in the interior. I thought of using the stock rear fog light
switch, but that far of a reach still requires you to take your eyes off
the road to operate and it would mess with the bulb check system. I sure
did not want to drill into the Zebrano, or dash facia with a big toggle
looking switch awkwardly hacked and certainly not factory. I could have
dumped the coin holder, but that's trick. So, where did I mount the switch
for the Hella's... As you sit with both hands on the finely wrapped
leather Audi quattro steering wheel at approx 10 and 2, looking out the
front windshield all the while, take your right hand and slide it under the
wheel towards the ignition. Following the black plastic steering column
cover undersides, stop sliding just before the dash, and in this fully
natural position, I mounted a Radio Shack factory looking fingertip toggle
switch with a little white dot on it. Totally hidden, fully concealed and
yet completely functional with both eyes still focused on the road.
Incidently, it toggles from left to right. After tightening -up all the air
and or vacumn leaks it has become apparent that the rear mainseal
occaisionaly sucks air in. The guys at VT SportsCar think that I'm on glue,
but i told 'em it happens. Guess I'll wait untill the clutch goes south as
It has plenty left in it. In the next few days I plan to finish the front
of the car off with some euro looking headlight eyebrows, stonegard and a
complete wax buff job to get it ready for winter. I also plan to run some
of the new "studded Hakki 1's" and will give a full report after a good
winter/ice run. I might do the 1.8bar ECU EPROM upgrade if you all think
that I can still have a driveable car that the wife could just hop into and
not be white faced with. Look for digital photos and YES... a fully updated
website, with downloadable illustrations for all, as an early Christams
gift from me to you fellow q-gesters...
Oh, my new VT plates are "RENNWGN"
Over and ouuuut from VT,
Thompson-
