plate that eliminates any chance of screwing up the seal installation ...

The reason I chose to quote this passage is that I'm about to lose that 
stupid thin rubber contraption that guides gasses from the crankcase 
up to the valve cover and into the intake.  I think the new part has lasted 
perhaps 3 years.  When I look at the same path on my 4kQ I wonder 
why they didn't simply use the same approach?!  In any case I am likely 
to modify the system somewhat so that the crankcase is no longer part 
of the metered air path.  I'm thinking this should eliminate any likelihood 
of the rear main seal vacuum leak squeal as well.  

Does anyone know how well bicycle inner tubes hold up to oil vapors?  
I'm thinking that I might be able to get away with using a piece of that 
rather than the funky rubber "casting" that Audi specs ...
