It never had a Ni plated ring or hex screws. It used to have molded
"dimples" that are eliminated for the 98 models. You are confusing the
steering wheel that was on the Audi TT and TTS show cars which were
outfitted as you describe, but the production sport wheels never had
any brightwork or real screws. I have the "old" Sport wheel on my A4q.

BTW, the standard steering wheel for the 98 models is really nice.
It's basically a 4-spoke version of the sport steering wheel. It doesn't
have that little Audi Sport logo, though.
