This sounds like the "classic" ignition switch problem which poped up on
some subset of 1992-1995 90s and 100s. Audi recalled a bunch of cars
from that era to replace the switches.

I think they must have gotten a bum batch of switches.

Don't believe the dealer. :-) Personally, I don't think Audi cast a wide
enough net on the recall. The ignition switch on my 1993 90 failed a 
couple of months ago, though the symptoms were different.

I took the car to the dealer and, in conjuction with AoA, was able to
get the switch replaced with 80% of the cost on Audi's tab, despite the
fact that my car "wasn't covered" by the recall.

I was a hassle (I spent over four hours there), but well worth it to
get Audi to pay. The dealer estimated the cost at close to $400 for
parts 
and labor.

I'd take it to the dealer and have them diagnose it. If it turns out to
be the ignition switch, insist they call AoA to get at least partial
coverage for you.
