Yes, that is how it was.  There was an article in European Car
a few years ago describing how to rewire a VW (Golf, I think) so
the radio shut off with the ign. sw.  Sorry I can't tell you which issue.

Do you lose your presets when this happens?  If so, bad power 
connection.  If not, something in your seek or scan switches. Wiggle
them a bunch, see if you can get it to clear up.
