Depending how loud the knocking is, maybe not. An experienced engine
rebuilding can tell you this.

will have your car listed with the options you have, and after calculating
your mileage, you will see what the car is worth retail/wholesale etc.

There is a company called ATK ENGINES (www.atkengines.com) that sell newly
rebuilt engines for almost anything. Most of their engine prices (within
the USA) are 950-1250 in cost...
These are complete engines with no core necessary, (except for certain
corvair and mercedes), so outright, you can buy a complete working engine,
move your carb and linkages over, and wala, you're back in business.
BTW, is your 5000 a 5-speed by chance?
