What to look out for in 84 - 85 200 turbos? (My brother has seen the light)

My brother and I need a little help. He's looking for another car to get
him around during the winter in Germany. His little 318 gets nervous
even on frost.
He has found an 84 or 85 200 turbo. I dont know much about the car
itself or even the turbo car in general.
Anything to look out for? Ive told him to pass on anything thats an
automatic and to really be looking out for 80-90 quattros.

Any help will be appreciated.
