On most Audis the tach is electronic and hooked to the #1 terminal-#15 goes
to the battery (I'm doing this from memory).  Check for a loose/dirty
connection there and/or a loose/dirty connection at the back of the
instrument cluster.  I don't know about you, but a not working tach would
disturb me greatly.  I even put a factory tach into my '80 5ks with auto
tranny just so I know what rpms are normal and if the tranny's slipping.
