Nostalgia question: what made them squeal?

Hi!

Does anyone know what made the racing Audi Turbo cars make that
lovely squealing noise when the drivers backed off the gas or
shifted gear? Especially the racing Audi 5000 turbo cars and the
early '80s quattro rally cars.
