Reluctant shifter

My 5kcstq tranny has developed the irritating habit of preventing me
from selecting 1st or 2nd gear after having waited at a traffic
light for a short while in neutral. If I give the shift lever a little
shake or wiggle as I ease it toward 1st gear, this happens much
less often. But once it acts "blocked," I have to muck around
with things for a few (eternal) seconds to persuade it. Is there
possibly some wear item in the shift lever mechanism that could
account for this or are my synchros going south?  Thanks in
