Bose Radio

Harley, that's a good question. I might have lived with the Bose
sound (with the bass full DOWN, treble full UP) but I thought the
radio was weak on reception. After replacing the bose head unit with
a Sony and disconnecting the Bose amps - driving the speakers
directly from the Sony - reception did not improve significantly.

The car is a 1990 200, and in my opinion the antenna is totally
inadequate! I finally fixed the problem by drilling a hole in the LR
fender in the same stock location used in the 84-98 5K series, and
fitted a Hirschmann antenna. The inner trunk liner even has a bulge
for the antenna motor!

INSTANT range improvement. AM reception improved at least 500%!

So the answer is, the Bose radio is probably not the culprit, as far
as poor reception. However, the only way to find out is to replace
the antenna with a REAL antenna and abandon the diversity (2
antenna lead) system.

My vote: do the antenna FIRST. Then if Bose sounds OK to your ears,
my guess is that you will be OK.
