How can I make my '91 200tq go faster?

I recently acquired a '91 200tq. Now that I have the basic repairs finished
(timing belt) I'd like to investigate the best/safest/least expensive
methods for increasing horespower on this car. Can the car reliably
withstand more horsepower (head gasket? driveline?).

Is there any info on the Web about the ECU/Turbocharger system that I can
read up on? Reading some mail from the list, it appears that several people
may have rolled their own EEPROMs for the ECU.

I'm a fairly competent DIY with a reasonable knowledge of fuel injection
systems. I develop embedded computer systems for a living so I have access
to EEPROM programming equipment.

I'm just as interested in learning as I am in going faster.
