Like the headlights, the current for the wiper motor flows through the switch
assembly.  The smoke is probably a sign that the switch is getting toasty (or
maybe a little bug got in there and is now a crispy critter).  I'd check the
terminals and ground on the motor and make sure you're got good clean
contacts.  If you saw smoke, I'll give even money that the insulation has
already begun to burn on the wires leading to the switch.  Also check the
fuse, on my car it is S15 and should be a 15 amp fuse.  Anyone BTDT on
converting the system to a tripped relay setup a-la the headlights?
