Instead of putting a resonator upstream, how about putting a tailpipe tip that has a built-in resonator? They usually have some fiberglass, as a baffle, built into them. They don't look any different really than one without the baffle.
That worked for me once, when I put a Cherry Bomb Turbo on a 1987 (?) Ford Escort. It was WAY too loud, and it resonated obnoxiously on the highway, but then I got a tip, out of the JC Whitney catalog, and it quieted it down nicely (but it was still sporty sounding). I think that the tip was a Monza (from Pacesetter), just like the dual tip ones that are on my '92 100S now (but they came as part of the Pacesetter Monza muffler that I just put on).
That it what I plan to do as well, if the low restriction muffler that I put on the Syncro is too loud. I'll just order a tip from JC Whitney (or from Pacesetter or ANSA).
Good luck.
