need advice on studdable snow tires

I recently purchase a '90 200 TQ. I do a lot of winter mountain driving here
in Colorado, where studded tires are legal. Any suggestions on what
brands/sizes will work best ?  Also, I have an opportunity to purchase an
extra set of the stock Audi alloy wheels. Any reason not do this? Finally,
the local mechanic is extolling the advantages of fitting the car with a
"chip".  Is this worthwhile? Any drawbacks?
