Where is the smoke coming from? (previously: I'm gonna change my Audi for a Nissan Sabre...)

I used to have hard starting (actually still takes a while to start
even with the new 5W40 synthetic oil I am running) and on startup I'd
have smoke out the back of the machine. Then on hard acceleration I'd
get oodles of smoke out the pipe, now on deceleration and braking I
get smoke out the pipe (so I am told). How can I check if it is really
my turbo that might be doing it? I know if I take it to the shark
that does "slap-bang-drive" jobs in this town (get engine, stick
turbo on side = professional job ???) he will tell me the turbo is
stuffed and that he will do the replacement job. But I know he will
tell me it is stuffed even it had been replaced the day before. :)
I do not want VW to do the job of refitment (if necessary), you guys
out there might be getting wonderful service from your VAG garages, but
here we deal with professional amateurs.
This is going to start getting to me. So I need some advice on how
to go about determining if it is really my turbo unit that might be
having a hard time and coughing smoke/oil through the motor. Perhaps
a faulty turbo unit could be the cause of those whistling sounds I
hear from the turbo side of the car when running about 100km/h. Heck,
I hope it ain't so serious!
If it is, then has anyone ever fitted a KKK K54? I saw a Opel
Calibra on Sunday with such a job on it. Driver claims 260km/h
out of the vehicle.
