this doesn't count as help.  It occurred to me while fantasizing about a
similar operation that one could drill a mess o'holes in that pipe and
stuff the space between it and the cat shell with fiberglass.  Thus
acheiving two goals - 1. no "empty" sound if rapped, seems like a real
cat to REO's, 2. some noise deadening ala homemade glass pack effect.
Build it like a gun silencer.
