"Wasted spark" ignitions are fairly common on crank timed auto engines.
These systems must obviously work harder and sometimes use multiple
coils.
One other issue regarding the Franco cam gear is the angular range
over which the rotor contact is in good firing position relative to the
distributor contacts. This range must include the electronically
controlled firing angle variations plus those added by the gear. It
would bear investigation.
