screwed up shifter

ok, did I mention I replaced my shifter linkage boot tonight?  did I
mention everything was fine on the test drive?  I drove out to rent a
couple of movies (2/$1 on tuesday, as if you cared), reverse worked
fine.  But lo and behold, no 5th gear on the highway.

I also had to push my car out of it's parking space - no reverse
either!  3rd and 4th are in their place.

1-2-3-4 all work fine but when I go over to the right for 5 or R it
feels weird and although I can engage gears where they should be, they
aren't there, I get 3 or 4.  I'm sure I just managed to misalign the
connector between the link rod from the pass compartment and the "shift
finger" as the fiche calls it, or perhaps the disintegrating bushings
the "finger" mounts in are not sitting right.  I'll look at it tomorrow
on a lift, but first,

Anybody experienced this before, have any advice, have any warnings,
enjoying a chuckle at my expense, etc.?
