Huw, dunno what car this is on, but I had the exact experience in my '84
5k.  Lost 5th & reverse.  Dealt with it for a while, then I lost 1 & 2
(in Iowa City, 1,200 miles from my home of DC at the time.)  Anyhow, it
was the plastic shift linkage on mine that had broken.  Easy &
relatively cheap fix.
