Re: V8 rebuild?

Is not the Audi V8 a full aluminum engine, i.e. no cast iron or steel
liners?
Such engines have chromium plated or Nicasil coated cylinder bores (probably
there are some other surface treatment methods). None of them are processes
that your average machine shop would perform. Such engines need new
cylinders
or the blocks sent back for reprocessing. So how does the Audi (or the
Porsche
V8, for that matter) do it?

The V8 engine is not rebuildable according to Audi. Crank bearings as well
as pistons aren't available as seperate parts, at least from Audi. Audi only
sells "NEW" engines. The V8 uses a high silicon alloy aluminium. after
final finishing the cycliders are washed with acid to remove a small amount
of aluminium. This leaves extreamaly hard silicon surface for the piston and
rings to ride on.
BMW used nikasil coating on it's early V8's but the coating is flaking
causing the engine to run rough. So BMW is replacing the short block with
one that has acid washed cycliders. The local dealer has about 10 BMW
shortblocks that have been replced. I've been trying to get them to sell me
them but they are reluctant..
