A4 Exhaust Noise

The exhaust system on my 96 A4 started to develop a problem after a
6-hour highway trip.  When letting go of the gas pedal in first or
second gear at 3-4K rpms, the exhaust makes a loud "backfiring" sound
for a few seconds.  It sounds like the exhaust is ready to drop.  I
visually checked it, and shook it, and all looks well.

I'm planning to go the dealer with this problem anyhow, but has anyone else
experienced this?
