Intermittent knocking 4kq

I am a happy owner of a 85 4kq w/80k miles on it, it's in the shop
about 1 or 2 times a month for a check up... (even if there's nothing
wrong, I'm a car hypochondriac I guess)  But now it has developed a 
strange knocking noise while driving that that goes away when I brake
hard and stop, then it will gradually return, or when I reverse 
suddenly and stop it will start knocking again.


It does not sound like a valve problem, I had an oil change recently, 
didn't seem to help, no loss in power anywhere.  Hope someone has an 
answer.  Thanks!
