You can pull the little "crotch" boot off for inspection without
disassembling anything. Probably all the wires (windows, locks, mirrors)
are either broken, or are on their way.

Radio Shack has some nice sensor wire (only 20 ga, though) for $3/20 ft.
It's _very_ flexible. Remove the door panel and the lower dash (~20 mins
total labor) and replace each broken wire (if it's not broken by now, it
ain't gonna. Some of the later cars, at least, have very spiffy wire for
the mirrors(?)). Make all the splices--whether soldered and
shrink-wrapped or crimp-connected--in the door or under the dash. DO NOT
try to make ANY repairs (crimp, tape, butt, otherwise) in the boot area.
Fix it right--ONCE--and be done.
