'98 A4 climate control

hi folks,

my wife's A4 avant is finally here. talk about good-handling car,
this is one fun wagon. ;-)

anyway i have one question: does the climate control set the
fan speed automatically (usually higher fan speed when the
car is still cold) even when the system has been set to MANUAL
(and the display says "MAN" as well)?

here's what i did: i set the temperature to 68 and set the fan
speed to 2 bars (that is the display bar). and i notice that
within seconds, the fan speed would go up as high as halfway
to the max. this persists until the interior temp has reached
the 68-degree mark (that's my guess, at least). then the fan
speed would stick to whatever i set it to.

the manual doesn't say anything. either that or i missed the
section that does.
