The non-turbo, non-quattro (notnoqer) Coupe did not get rear wheel discs
(in the US, at least) until mid-1987.

And the rear drum brakes ARE common VW parts...same as an '87 Jetta, I
believe (have your local store cross-reference the part numbers).  I
think Beck-Arnley has new complete rear wheel cylinders that you can get
for under $15.  We put these on my fathers '82 Coupe a few years back,
and haven't had a problem since.
