Could it be that the knocking is the clasic vacuum pump rod?  This pump
runs off a camshaft lobe.  The way to check it is to remove the pump
from the cylinder head (only two nuts and an o-ring holding it in
place), remove the rod that goes into the cylinder head, and reattach
the pump.  If the noise disapears, bingo! Replacement O-rings are
availabe at the dealer and are not expensive.
