I didn't catch the other replies, but I think it's likely that it's the 
vacuum pump on the side of the head.

If you take it out, remove the pushrod, put it back on the head without
the pushrod, and it still knocks, then it's something else.  But try 
that and see if that's what it is.

I'd be really surprised if you haven't gotten a reponse from the list
yet 
to check that pump.

Unless we're all waiting for someone else to mention it.

The pump in question is just to the right of where the arrow is pointing 
in the photo.
